Healthy Chocolate Chip Cookies

By Kate Horney

May 15 is National Chocolate Chip Day!

Chocolate chips are an essential ingredient in dozens of delicious baked goods – chocolate chip cookies, chocolate chip pancakes, chocolate chip muffins, chocolate chip brownies, chocolate chip bagels, and many more. You can even find chili recipes that call for these sweet morsels! (Chocolate chip chili?! I know, I was in SHOCK as much as you are!)

Today, we’re going to celebrate Chocolate Chips in two ways:

  1. A little chocolate chip history.
  2. A HEALTHIER way to enjoy these treats! 🙂

First, some history….

In the 1930s, Ruth Graves Wakefield created the original chocolate chip cookie at her Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts. Ruth intended to bake chocolate cookies for her guests, but she ran out of baker’s chocolate. She substituted with chopped up semi-sweet chocolate morsels and discovered that the pieces did not melt into the dough as she expected. Her cookies were an instant hit.

Today, 25% of all the cookies baked in the United States are chocolate chip!

And now, what you’ve been waiting for…

A healthier way (seriously, do not eat the chocolate chip chili) to celebrate National Chocolate Chip Day…

Using one of my favorite ingredients: OAT BRAN!

ENJOY! 🙂

Instead of inhaling 1/2 a bag of chocolate chips today, consider your worth (yes, you’re health is worth much more than a quick sugar fix) and treat yourself and your family to a healthy version of America’s favorite cookie instead. Shhhh…they may not even know they’re healthy!
