Protein Shakes for Kids

By Kate Horney

I know the value of protein shakes for moms, but what about protein shakes for kids?

This was a big question I had when my boys hit their “picky eater” stage. I breastfed both boys past their first birthday. From there, I transitioned them to healthy toddler friendly foods and it went smoothly. But somewhere out of the blue…

BAM!! All aboard the train to picky-ville.

My fear was that my picky eaters might not be getting the the proper amount nutrition that they need – both micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) and macronutrients (proteins, carbs and fats). As a nutrition coach and fitness professional, I know that protein is essential for healthy kids to grow and develop, so I began a hunt for a kid-friendly nutritional shake.

According to the latest standards for Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs), the amount of protein required by young children and teens may exceed that of adults. Children and teens need extra protein to support rapid growth. The amount depends on factors such as age, body weight and activity level. However, children and teens should get 10 to 35 percent of their total daily calories from protein in order to support normal health, growth and muscular development.

With that said: protein + nutrition is important.

But I know that adult protein shakes are not right for children on a daily basis. And it can be hard to know the best way to use protein powder for kids. High levels of protein intake for kids can may lead to dehydration, kidney damage, and increased excretion of calcium, which puts kids at risk for kidney stones. So if it was something we’d use regularly, we needed something that was designed for THEM.

For breakfast, you can replace sugary cereals with a delicious and nutritious shake! You can do the same for snacks – replacing potato chips or crackers with a vitamin-packed KidzShake! It is a healthy snack that can boost the nutritional intake of everyone in the family, and it’s 100% kid approved. Moms – I promise, both you and your kids will love it. You’ll feel fantastic knowing that they’re getting 100% nutrition in their daily diet. Created by a pediatrician (a mom herself), Dr. Rach wrote: “As a doctor and a mother, I couldn’t think of a better and easier product for my children. KidzShake gives kids all the vitamins and nutrients they need in one easy and delicious shake. By using KidzShake for breakfast and as an afternoon snack, I can significantly reduce my kids’ sugar intake and improve their health”.

Looking for a super healthy alternative to traditional chocolate milk, KidzShake is perfectly yummy with just water in a shaker bottle or in a blender, but here is a fun recipe to get some extra whole foods into your kids “chocolate milk”.

Note for mamas: To help boost your child’s protein and nutrition intake, look first for ways to help them improve their diet. I see protein shakes for kids and other nutritional supplements as small rocks – things that should be used to supplement a diet.

Supplements are not designed to be replacements. Use protein shakes for kids as a supplement while you’re dealing with picky eaters, but continue to focus on whole foods and teaching your kids healthy habits that will last them for life!
