How to Use Epsom Salt for Muscle Soreness & Cramps
Whether from overwork or just an extra tough workout, muscle aches are common and are experienced by almost everyone at some point or another–even advanced athletes. Mildly sore muscles is simply a natural outcome of any kind of physical activity.
General soreness after exercise is typically caused by micro tears in the muscle.
Over time as the muscle rebuilds itself stronger to accommodate the activity, soreness should decrease.
But if you notice that you’re experiencing prolonged muscle soreness and cramps, there are other factors to consider.
A muscle cramp is a strong, painful contraction or tightening of a muscle that comes on suddenly and lasts from a few seconds to several minutes.
Muscle cramps may be linked to a variety of causes, including:
- Exercise, injury or overuse
- Blood flow problems
- Lack of minerals such as calcium, potassium and magnesium
- Certain medication
If you’re looking for a natural way to soothe sore muscles and decrease the experience of muscle cramps, in addition to rest days, massage, and foam rolling, epsom salt is a great thing to add into your recovery routine.
Epsom salts are made up of magnesium sulfate. Magnesium is a natural muscle relaxant, and as salts, this compound helps to pull excess fluids out of the tissues, reducing swelling and decreasing cramps.
Magnesium assists the body in reducing inflammation and helping muscle and nerve function. Sulfates help to improve the absorption of nutrients, flush toxins and improve blood flow.
Together, they form a powerhouse knockout for sore muscles and body aches.
A common way to relieve muscle soreness and cramps is to take an epsom salt bath.
How to Have an Epsom Salt Bath:
Simply dissolve a cup or two of epsom salt in a warm tub of water and soak for 15 minutes or until the water has cooled, up to three times per week. (Note: this is not recommended for those with health conditions such as heart problems, high blood pressure or diabetes).
The problem I’ve found with epsom salt baths, however, is simply this: TIME!
As a busy mom, some days I rarely have time for a two minute shower…never mind a 15 minute soak in the tub.
So if you’re like me, and need an alternative way to use epsom salt for muscle soreness and cramps, consider a natural rub like my favorite, PROcure Epsom Salt Rub.
PROcure Epsom Salt Rub is a concentrated spot treatment gel uniquely formulated with aloe vera and essential oils to soothe muscle tension, aches and pains.
Whether you’re suffering from overexertion or a demanding workout, PROcure Epsom Salt Rub, helps improve recovery by allowing you to apply the trusted remedy of Epsom Salt directly where it hurts most…without a bath!
I love that this Epsom Salt Rub also includes aloe, as the aloe plant has been used medicinally since ancient times as a multipurpose skin treatment.
Known for its soothing effects, aloe contains 9 of the 10 minerals essential for muscle health and recovery. Aloe also penetrates the skin 4x better than water alone, allowing the restorative powers of Epsom Salt to reach painful areas quicker.
How to Use the Epsom Salt Rub:
For targeted relief of muscle tension, aches and pains, apply to affected area and massage until fully absorbed. Reapply as needed for continued relief.
HINT: For even more soothing relief, try covering the affected area with a warm compress after applying PROcure Epsom Salt Rub. Relax and let nature take its course.
You can find PROcure Products at Walmart in the first aid aisle, or online at amazon.com.
