The No Gym Needed Workout

By Blair Lindler

My name is Blair, I prioritize fitness and my health, I coach others with their fitness/health, and I have a confession to make: I do not have a gym membership.

I think I may have heard an audible gasp?  Well, let me explain. The first reason why I do not have a gym membership: financial restrictions. I know there are at least a few readers out there who can understand this reason… Yes, I work a full time job and a part time job. But guess what? My financial priorities don’t allow room for an additional $30-50 a month that could be put toward debt or bills. And that’s just how it is.

The second reason I do not have a gym membership: I don’t really need one.

Did I just hear a second gasp?  Although having a gym membership often makes it more convenient to pursue one’s healthy lifestyle, I think our culture puts too much of a stigma on a gym membership. It’s almost to the point where people think that without a gym membership, they can’t workout or that they can’t pursue a healthy lifestyle.

Um… That is so far from the truth!  (And that’s one thing that I love about our Boot Camp– fat loss workouts aren’t dependent on gym equipment!)

Don’t believe you can get in a good workout without the gym?

The No Gym Needed Workout

Here is one of my favorite (butt busting) workouts…. the only equipment it needs is a mat, dumbbells, and an Interval Timer (there are free apps for your phone!)

Step One: 1.5 mile run.  Not everyone loves running, but it’s something that I enjoy (for the shorter distances). It’s one of my favorite ways to kind of “get into the zone.” This doesn’t mean that you have to love it, but it works for me. ☺ If this isn’t your cup of tea, try a 20min bike ride or something of the like.

Step Two: The Circuit.  Not a single item from this workout required a gym or any serious gym equipment (aside from appropriate weight dumbbells). Give it a try. Do the best you can do, and just remember to Work until you can’t, then rest until you can.

This is how I set up my stations for my circuit:

  1. Perform each Station for 1 minute with my Gym Boss Timer
  2. Perform the Traveling Activity both to and from each station (this may take more or less than 1 minute – focus on the activity here, not the time)
  3. Repeat each cycle twice:

Seriously… It’s one of my favorites! Well, I kind of have a love-hate relationship with it. But that’s the kind of relationship I want in my workouts. I want to push myself. I want to challenge myself. I want it to be hard and for me to ask myself “Why?!” Because that’s when it counts. That’s when change happens.

Now that I’ve shared some of my favorite no-gym moves, I’d love to hear what you have to say…
