4 Surprising Foods that are Stalling Your Fat Loss
With all of the hype about New Year’s resolutions out there it’s hard not to be curious about some of the foods that are mentioned in various weight loss programs an plans….
Today, let’s look at 4 foods that are often talked about as being healthy, but are actually NOT conducive to fat loss!
4 Surprising Foods that are Stalling Your Fat Loss:
- Protein Bars –
Now before you tell me I’m crazy, hear me out. There are some great protein bars out there that are low in sugar and very helpful in maintaining a fat loss friendly lifestyle (Think Thin Bars and Quest Bars) but quite a few protein bars are just glorified candy bars. When looking for a good protein bar you want to look at a few things on the wrapper. First take the grams of protein and add that to the grams of fiber. Take that number and subtract it from the total grams of carbohydrates. You want this number to be as low as possible. I try to keep them below 10. This indicates if a protein bar, or any packaged food for that matter, will create the desired insulin response in our bodies.
- Flavored yogurts – Growing up I was always told that yogurt was a healthy snack but upon further review most yogurts, including flavored Greek yogurt is loaded with sugar. The high amounts of sugar create an insulin spike thus causing your body to store fat instead of burn it. A good alternative to enjoying protein packed Greek yogurt is to buy plain Greek yogurt and add your own fruit like strawberries or blueberries and a little bit of Stevia if you want it sweeter.
- Fruit – Not all fruits are created equal. Some naturally high sugared fruits that can inhibit fat burning and should be limited are bananas, pineapple, grapes, watermelon, and mango. Low sugared fruits that can be enjoyed more frequently include berries, apples, pears, grapefruit, and cherries. While we are on the topic of fruit I would like to mention that it is much more beneficial to eat the actual fruit that drinking fruit juices which are filled with additives.
- Cereal – Many cold cereals are marketed to be “good for you” foods in one way or another. As far as fat loss goes I would stay away from them all. Most are low in fiber and protein and high in carbohydrates. Follow the same rules that I gave for the protein bars. A good alternative to cold cereal is oat bran. It is high in both fiber and protein and is sure to keep you more full for a longer period of time.
Remember that nobody is perfect and that eating for fat loss is a lifestyle. Plan ahead and consider all of your options when choosing your foods. Let your food work for you by creating a fat burning response in your body.
Not all healthy foods are fat loss foods but almost all fat loss foods are healthy foods!
