Q & A with Powercakes

Super excited to bring you a fun and inspirational interview with my friend Kasey Arena, from Powercakes! Kasey is a certified personal trainer, entrepreneur, blogger, & owner of her company, POWERCAKES LLC. She specializes in fitness, health, cooking, and baking clean food as well as being the creator and voice behind the http://Powercakes.net blog and website.

I graduated in May with a Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Physical Education and am currently pursuing my dreams of launching my very own product. My company product will launch in early 2013!!

I have a passion for teaching the importance of proper nutrition combined with fitness. My goal is to travel around the US to Universities and Schools to present on this topic as well as sharing my POWERCAKES LLC product with others.

My background starts with my mom being a personal trainer. Growing up, we lived a very healthy lifestyle. I didn’t understand it back then, but now I know why my mom made certain choices for our family when it came to healthy eating and fitness! I’ve struggled with food allergies for 10 years which lead to many uncomfortable stomach and digestion issues. In college, I decided to compete in my first Figure Competition. The first time around I listened to everyone but myself and started to become unhealthy but thinking it was “healthy” to cut things out of my diet and workout for long periods of time. After my first show, I was motivated to find a way to do things a healthier way. The next year, I fueled myself properly & worked out but also embraced rest, recovery, & eating powerfoods! It’s been a learning process, but I now understand the correlation between properly nourishing our bodies, rest & recovery, & physical activity! The food part is so fun for me- I am a huge foodie that loves to bake & cook! Hence the POWERCAKES & recipes that I create daily & share with others to show that you CAN eat healthy, good tasting, foods & still attain your fitness goals!

You have obviously made fitness a priority even in your busy schedule. Was there a moment of definition where you consciously decided to go for it or was it more of a passive thing? 

I’ve always been into athletics growing up & now! I’ve played soccer since I was 8 years old & ran track from 7th – 12th grade. I knew I loved to compete but never embraced the “fitness” benefits until I was in college. I did things an unhealthy way before I was educated. I used to do hours of cardio and hardly fuel my body properly thinking I wanted to be “Skinny”. Well, I never had energy and learned the hard way that my choices were not helping my efforts. In the end, I found that properly fueling my fitness has changed my life & I love to feel healthy and happy!

How would you advise women who are interested in health & fitness and want to leverage their time better? What’s the first step?

I think the first step is creating a plan! Writing down a calendar of your week and then plugging in your time for working out! Also, it’s great to write down meal ideas! This way, you will start writing everything out, and then after a while you will know it like the back of your hand! I am the QUEEN of to do lists!

 What is ONE THING these women can start on today that will not overwhelm them?

I would say DRINK MORE WATER! Not only does this help with your bodily functions but it also gives you more energy!

What are your top 3 daily practices to stay focused, perform at a high level and live the fat loss lifestyle?

  1. I wake up every morning and drink a glass of water with fresh squeezed lemon juice to cleanse my body, rehydrate, and kick start my digestion!
  2. I eat a lot of plant based foods every couple of hours to give my body the nutrients it needs in order to have last energy all day and keep my blood sugar stable!
  3. I remember to take deep breaths! When I get busy, I tend to take short quick breaths so I practice slowing myself down & taking a nice big deep cleansing breath!

Remember, BE TRUE TO YOU! In this world, so many people try to be like someone else when we have to remember we are all different for a reason! We need to work on embracing others differences and learning from them, less judgment, & appreciating others!  🙂
