Got Purpose?

By Kira O’Donnell

What is your purpose? Coach Jen touched upon this a little bit in her latest blog. Today I am going to break it down for you a little further and help you make that mental switch and set you up for success!

Purpose: noun – something set up as an object or end to be attained

Sounds simple enough right? The problem is that many times we do not set out a clear purpose for ourselves which will often lead to failure and going back to our old unhealthy ways. It is so easy to give up on ourselves by skipping workouts and running towards our comfort foods. Once we start with this negative thinking it is so easy to fall into that downward spiral.  The motivation dwindles. Another idea failed. Has this ever happened to you?

Having a purpose gives you energy, focus, and perseverance during your most challenging times. It can also be known as your “WHY?” I think it’s probably safe to say that most people diet and exercise because they want to feel good and be healthy. While these are great reasons they are not purposes.

Let’s get a little deeper…

Why do you want to feel good and be healthy? Does a certain disease run in your family that you are trying to prevent? Are you trying to set a good example for your children who are starting to follow your unhealthy habits? Are you overweight and can’t participate in some of your favorite activities because of it?  Whatever your purpose is, it needs to be something that speaks to you and moves you personally, something that nothing can get in the way of.

Let’s do a little mindset coaching together today:

  1. Take a few minutes and figure out what your purpose is. Yup…right now. 🙂 It should be a statement written in first person, present tense, as if it is already true. “I’m lean and fit and I want to inspire my family to see the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.”
  2. Write your purpose down on paper. Place it somewhere where it will be visible to you often.
  3. Set some SMART goals to help you along the way (see last week’s blog by Coach Jenn)
  4. Share your purpose- with someone close to you for accountability.
  5. Believe in yourself!

Once you find your true purpose you will find that making that switch to living a healthier fat loss lifestyle is easier than you thought. It will push you to wake up each morning for your workouts and motivate you to make healthy fat loss food choices throughout the day. It will take some practice but revisit your purpose many times during the day. When you feel like giving up and that voice inside you says you can’t do it all you will need to do is remind yourself of your purpose and tell yourself that YOU ARE WORTH IT!
